AMD Releases Ryzen ThreadRipper Pro, Intros Lenovo Workstation with 64-Core Processor
July 15, 2020AMD’s HEDT chip will now be available to workstation PCs and will be under the AMD Pro series, which is best known for its silicon-level security features and outstanding reliability.
AMD released the first-ever ThreadRipper Pro on Tuesday. Its flag-bearer, the ThreadRipper PRO 3995WX boasts 64 cores and 128 threads, while the flagship Intel Xeon W is maxed at 28 cores. Other ThreadRipper Pro chips will be available with 32 cores, 16 cores, or 12 cores.
Aside from having the most number of cores in a single processor, the ThreadRipper Pro chips also come equip with fast boost and base frequencies. Leading the pack in terms of base frequency is the 12 core, Ryzen ThreadRipper 3945WX, with 4.0GHz; followed by the 16 core, Ryzen ThreadRipper 3955WX, with 3.9GHz; then the 32 core, Ryzen ThreadRipper 3975WX, with 3.5GHz; while the flagship Ryzen ThreadRipper 3995WX with 64 cores runs at 2.7GHz. The 12 core and 16 core ThreadRipper Pros have the same 4.3GHz boost frequency, while the 32 core and 64 core models will boost up to 4.2GHz.
Lenovo will be the first to make use of the flagship Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3995WX in their workstation offerings, making them the world’s first-ever 64-core Pro workstation provider. As the world’s first 64 core equipped system, the Lenovo P620 workstation delivers unprecedented level of performance and flexibility in a single CPU chassis.
The new ThreadRipper Pros will also pave way for PCIE Gen 4 to be a standard for workstations. This will enable ThreadRipper Pro equipped systems, like the Lenovo P620, to a much higher data rate than the previous PCIE generation, enabling the use of much faster storage devices and GPUs.
Moreover, Ryzen ThreadRipper Pro based systems will also feature 128 PCIE Gen 4 lanes, 8 Channel ECC RDIMM, LRDIMM, and UDIMM DDR4 3200 support; and 2TB memory support. These new processors designed for workstations will come equipped with AMD PRO technologies such as:
· AMD PRO security – Layers of built-in security features to help protect sensitive data
· AMD PRO manageability – Simplified deployment, imaging, and management compatible with user’s current infrastructure
· AMD Memory Guard – Full memory encryption to help prevent physical attacks on sensitive data.
· AMD PRO Business Ready – 18 months of planned software stability and 24 months of planned availability
