Shawn Layden, PlayStation Worldwide Studios Former Chairman and current Tencent Games Strategic Advisor had a chat with Gordon Van Dyke of Raw Fury at gamescom asia. During this, Layden shared insights about his journey from PlayStation to Tencent Games.
They also explored current industry trends and spotlighted the growing expansions of Asian developers in Western markets.
The discussion emphasized the unique strengths of AA games, highlighting the need for faster development cycles with smaller teams and innovative ideas. Moreover, he stressed the importance of passion-driven pitches over monetization schemes.
Layden advises developers to focus on growing markets and economies like Asia where there is significant potential for success. “Consider the markets in Asia—they are expanding rapidly. This is critical for the global gaming ecosystem as a whole because, quite simply, we need more people engaging with games.”

Meanwhile, Agnes Kim, Xbox Director of Global Expansion dove into the developments of Southeast Asia’s developer ecosystem at gamescom asia. She also shared Xbox‘s work to date in supporting the region’s games.
Kim gave a sneak peek as well into the latest Xbox games launching in Southeast Asia soon. Among these include SEDAP! by KopiForge and Let’s Build a Dungeon by Springloaded from Singapore, DreadHaunt by Digital Happiness from Taiwan, and more.
Future Realities of PC Games – Growing “The Exit 8 VR”
Mattheiu Younna, MyDearest Head of Publishing captured the experience of porting 2023’s hit indie game The Exit 8 into VR on Meat Quest. This helped The Exit 9 evolve its identity and flavour to the next level.
He delved into the genesis of the project and gave advice on spotting opportunities to transition traditional “flat” games to VR.
